CML has developed a novel mechanical structure to best take advantage of its understanding of the behavior of SMA wire. The patented "Angled V" wire arrangement gives CML's customers and licensees the smallest and simplest mechanical AF actuator possible.

Passing a current through the wire causes it to heat, thereby contracting. This lifts the lens from the infinity preview position, moving it through the entire focal range, to the macro position.

CML has made many mechanical advances, ensuring that the SMA wire is positioned and tensioned optimally for the Auto-Focus application. This means that CML based A-F actuators are able to operate at high temperatures (70°C), settle quickly after each movement and cause negligible lens tilt.

CML has filed more than 30 SMA actuator related inventions worldwide. These filings include claims in both the mechanical and control elements. Camera’s based on CML’s SMA technology are now shipping in handsets throughout Asia.
