Our Origin

Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd. (CML) was founded as 1 Limited in 1995, by Dr. Tony Hooley, a Cavendish Laboratory physics PhD and ex-IBM Research Fellow at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge.

The original mission of the company was to radically transform the quality, cost and size of loudspeakers by applying state-of-the-art digital signal processing and software techniques. The company has been largely successful in achieving this goal, however along the way, through necessity, the company also became expert in actuation technology.

Very early in the company's history it learned that precision control of the actuators in a loudspeaker was the secret to producing high fidelity sound. Perfect control of the actuator required a perfect understanding of its design and material composition. The company collected together top quality physicists, material scientists and mechanical engineers to complement its existing group of electronics and software engineers. This symbiotic combination of these great technical disciplines is collectively known as 'Mechatronics'. Hence the company's present name.
